Fingerprint Scanner Hacked

Biometric security was broken 3 times in a row. The scary thing is it only took few days to crack, although the manufacturer claims it’s never broken before. I never thought it could be that easy! In the video, they left out a crucial step which I figured it out eventually. (Thank you, Adam and Jamie!) See the video for yourself.

Very Compact Survival Kit

survival kitCould you survive in the wilderness without any food and water? If you had this Altoids tin in your pocket, you could do fine for a few days. It’s jam-packed with steel stricker, LED flashlight, water purification tablets, fishing gear, compass, knife, and few other survival goodies. Unless boredom killed you for being alone for so many days, you could really use a good bath afterwards! Follow the link for assembling instruction. > fieldandstream

extreme penExtreme jobs require extreme tools to deliever extreme results! You may not be as extreme as I am, but you still need this pen. It enables you to write in pretty much any kind of environment: wet or dry, up or down at any angle, any temperature, and any altitude. It even comes with an integrated PDA stylus. The Tao of Backup

the tao of backupYou never know when your hard drive is going to die. You can never predict when a deadly computer virus is going to strike. Even with the best file recovery and antivirus software, none produces as much protection as a complete backup system. The Tao of Backup talks about the importance of systematic backup in an interest way. If you can’t afford to lose files but too lazy to backup, this is a wake-up call.

I’ll soon write about a cheap backup solution in an upcoming post. In the meantime, check this out. > taobackup

SpyGizDealz: Norton AntiVirus 2007 for Almost Free (3-User License)

Norton AntiVirus 2007Most of you probably have more than one computer. I own 2 laptops and 2 desktop, although I usually come up short on my mortgage payment every month. (Yeap, I spend all my money on cool gizmos and shiny gadgets too!) Obviously, I’m not that kind of person who installs a single license of antivirus software into multiple computers. (My buddy used to get away with that for a while.) What I do is to purchase multi-license software. Here we have 3-user license of Norton AntiVirus 2007 for only spending $7 on shipping after $40 mail-in rebate. Deal expires on 10/12/06. > outpost

Easy File Recovery

file scavengerIt seems appropriate to talk about file recovery since I introduced a file shredder software in the last post. As hard drive capacity is getting bigger, the heartbreak is getting bigger as well. Yes, it’s very common for computer users to lose years of files these days due to hard drive failure. (What’s that? Backup, what backup?) But fear not, File Scavenger would rescue most of your files even from a formatted or corrupted hard drive. Professional data-recovery could cost you hundreds of dollars to restore lost files from a dead drive. File Scavenger is only 50 bucks for saving all the hard drives you will destroy. This program is very well rated, and I use it myself. Although it failed to retore files deleted by the File Shredder in my so-called “shredder-vs-scavenger” test, it works pretty well in my other experiments. > quetek

Old Hard Drive is An Open Diary

file shredderYou got a new computer, and you’re eager to get rid of your old piece of junk. So you did what a smart person would do by reformatting the hard drive before you passed it to someone else. Think again, smarty-pants! Any person who is aware of file recovery program knows how to recover at least a portion of your formatted hard drive. Oh no, your hard drive became an open diary to the world! If you’re lucky, someone might just be nosy to see what you have in your hard drive, otherwise, you’re in for a big problem. Pretty scary, huh? Read more »

New Kind of Biometrics

idesia biometricAnother biometric security solution! IDesia Bio-Dynamic Signature (BDS) will soon deliver exactly what I’m looking for. According to the company, BDS offers better performance than the other alternatives. To access a locked computer system as an example, you only need to touch the sensors with any finger from each arm for few seconds. But does it work? It’s an unique electro physiological signature from a living person that does the trick.

This technology could be potentially applied to cell phones, PDAs, safes, ID, and credit cards in addition to a computer system. And best of all, the manufacturing cost is significantly less than any other kind of biometric sensor, so the saving will pass down to the consumers as a result. IDesia is still working on perfecting its design. I can’t wait to test it!

Only one question though…if someone has one arm, how does it work? Use the foot? > idesia-biometrics
